Bush peonies are herbaceous perennials derived from Paeonia lactiflora and hybrids. These are mound-shaped bushy plants about 3 ft in height and width. Peony bushes are lovely in the June garden and lend a wonderful nostalgic fragrance. Peonies are also wonderful fragrant cut flowers. Bush peonies do not grow from bulbs, but from fleshy roots, often attaining a degree of woodiness over the years and enormous mass. It is commonly recognized that Bush peonies require a couple of years to fully establish in your garden. Spring-planted stock sometimes does not bloom until the following season. Peonies will die back entirely to the ground at the end of the growing season, leaving only the root underground. See more information here.
